3/7/2006 - with the coming Mayor's race, look for news and commentary on this page.

Weds, March 3, 2004 - Raunchy Videos at the AMN (Austin Music Network)?  Yep, sez Wynn and he's going to dump 'em.  And Austin City Limits is looking for a new home.  The Frost Tower gives Austin that ghostbusters/techno look.  And SXSW is going to be revving up again soon.  I'm on the way to a media event with Will Wynn thanks to an invite from Bob Cole.

See "Will Won" special election night report with videos, pictures and commentary. Don't miss this!  This feature will be on our main page until June 6 when we will replace this with coverage of Will Wynn's inauguration on June 16th.

"Will Won" special election night report with videos, pictures and commentary. Don't miss this!

Saturday night May 3 - You could feel the exuberance and energy as Will and Anne Elizabeth Wynn exploded into a spirited dance on the Hill's Cafe dance area.  They twirled, twisted and swirled around the dance floor in celebration of the long awaited Mayor's race victory.  The crowd was gassed by their gyrations.

Getting 58 percent of the vote, Wynn, current city council member, was elected mayor. His major opponents followed further behind with Max Nofziger garnering 16 percent, Marc Katz with 13 percent, and Brad Meltzer with 8 percent of the vote. About 64,000 voters, or 13 percent of total registered voters, cast their ballots. Jennifer Gale and Leslie Cochran each got about a thousand votes or 1% of the total.

There was a full house at the Hills Beer garden. The crowd was in awe, as Wynn went around slapping backs, giving out hugs and hearty handshakes to the assembled followers. One guy, not the hit of the party, kept running around with his "I gotta tell ya' Will Wynn is the next Mayor" impersonation.  Advice to this Katz impersonator, hold on to your day job.  Overall, it was a huge lovefest and the assembled supporters loved it.

Bob Cole, KVET talk show host and Hills Cafe magnate (and Matt Lauer lookalike), introduced Wynn.  He said that "we are very lucky to have this gentleman here in Austin" and that he won an across the board endorsement from nearly every organization in this town.

Cole said Wynn could maintain a sense of humor and yet do a very serious job and that "he has the support of both developers and environmentalists." In a Longhorn town, Cole said, he is the first Aggie Mayor. Then Cole (pictured below the picture of Wynn at the top of the page at the exact moment he shouted out "Will Won") couldn't contain himself as he introduced Wynn to the excited crowd of supporters, shouting out "ladies and gentlemen, the next Mayor of Austin, Will Won".

Wynn took the stage after giving Cole a big handshake and hug and you could sense the emotion and the excitement as Wynn recounted his final day of the election, recalled the intensity of the campaign and made clear his priorities for the future.  You could sense that he really wants to involve all the people of Austin in the process of determining their future and sense that he wants the citizens to feel empowered in the process.

"Let's get Austin back to work and rebuild our revenue," Wynn said, "let's reinvent to some degree what we do and bring the community together to keep Austin, Texas, the best city in this country."

Pick up the rest of the election night story on the http://austinmayor.com main page!

Friday 5/2/2003 - Three of the major mayor candidates were on the Sam and Bob morning talk radio show on KVET 98.1 FM.  390-5838 is the call in number.  There's no call screener, if they answer you're on the air.  Brad Meltzer, Marc Katz and Max Nofziger showed up.  When asked about the "Weapons of Music Destruction (noise ordinance), do you want to free Austin music or direct it.  Max says we want to free Austin Music and "wishy washy" Wynn changed his mind on the smoking ordinance.  Marc Katz asked Sam "what were the concessions the government gave to the Geezinslaws?"  Meltzer said this "is the live music capitol of the world and we need to take care of the musicians, we need to enjoy it, see it and hear it."

Tomorrow's election day, said Cole.  He asked them what their favorite moment over the last three months.  Marc Katz remembered  the Gay and Lesbian Alliance.  He recalled that Wynn said he was a Republican at the GOP forum, a Democrat at the Democrat forum, an environmentalist at the Environment forum, and Katz got up at the gay forum and asked if Wynn was going to be gay at that forum.

Brad Meltzer's favorite moment was his talk with Fred Gillam from Cap Metro when he found out we could get $30 mil for the River Walk.  We're just sitting on the money, Brad said. Max said Perry Lorenz brought that issue to the Council

Maxs favorite moment last night on South Congress and there were people shouting "Max for Mayor"; it brought a tear to Brad Meltzer's eye, said Max.  Cole responded, "I call that branding sir."

Asking by a listener about panhandling, Meltzer said we need an ordinance to take them off the streets and cited New Yorks policy.  Marc said you can buy used ash trays cheap in the Big Apple, we need to get them out of the downtown.  The Salvation Army doesn't belong on East Seventh street near all the bars.  There's a campus not being used on the East side.  Max said he doesn't have the solution and we need to work on it, San Francisco has the problem.

Wednesday 4/30/2003  Willies Birthday Wednesday. Hills Cafe is having a big Willie birthday celebration (April 30, 1933) tonight at 8 and Sam is playing the Broken Spoke Saturday night. KVET will carry it live from 8 till 9 pm.  There will be "celebrities".  Countless callers to the show actually thought Willie Nelson was in the KVET studio because of the dead on impersonation that Bob Cole pulled off, not quite as good as a third grader could pull off though.

KVET Celebrates Willie Nelson's Birthday By Giving You Free Tickets! Listen all day this Wednesday, April 30th...it's Willie's Birthday & KVET is celebrating by giving away tickets to see Willie May 7, 8 or 9 at Stubb's.

Will Wynn was the guest. When asked about jumping in Barton Springs fully clothed being a "Michael Dukakis tank incident" by Bob Cole, Will Wynn said he did take his tie off and he did it on a dare from Gus Garcia.  He fielded questions from Sam and Bob for at least an hour and held his own on some tough questions about light rail, the small business economy, the smoking ordinance and roads.  At one point, he said there were 65 miles of roadway nearing completion as part of the Ben White interchange and he reiterated his support of the controversial Loop 130.  He favors a hands off attitude toward small business, with some reservations.

Will Wynn has, reservedly, come out against the City Council messing with Austin's restaurants and is supporting a "no vote" on the smoking ordinance by the City Council although he reserves the right for the voters to have an election on this issue.  Marc Katz called in to the Tuesday morning show to re-iterate his support of the no smoking ban issue and called Will Wynn to task for taking the side of whatever group he was talking to.  Isn't that just politics? replied Cole/Allred and Katz replied, "Why didn't you clue me in on this earlier in the race".  Katz is making a strong bid for last minute votes today on the final day of early voting and on Saturday's election.  Cole said he'd like to see the mayor's candidates go another round on his show.

Latest austinmayor.com poll results as of 4/9/2003 The latest austinmayor.com poll shows Max Nofziger moving in to second place behind Will Wynn and just narrowly ahead of Marc Katz.  He may be picking up steam due to some favorable press in the Chronicle, although he is being outspent by Meltzer, Katz and Wynn (see story below called Money, Money, Money).

On the lighter side, anything would be on the light side compared to that, the Los Angeles city mayor and council have voted to rent three golden monkeys for a year for one million dollars.  You have to ask yourself, what would our mayoral candidates do for Austin that would keep pace with this bold move, what with all this talk of budget cuts.  And why are they renting them?  Couldn't they buy three golden monkey for a million bucks?

Sunday, March 23 - The other day Bob mused aloud, "I wonder whatever happened to our old friend Linda Curtis?"  Well, she's alive and well and dropping bombshells on the Mayor's race.  AustinMayor.com attended her Independent Texan Mayor's Forum at UT on Saturday afternoon and has full coverage of the event. Wait till you hear her comments on the Indy Texans page.  By the way, Sam and Bob have permission to reproduce, replay, quote or copy anything on this website for use on their website or on the radio and that includes, of course, the Linda Curtis comment.  Here's the Linda Curtis bombshell video clip.

Friday March 21 - Bob invited us all down to Hills Cafe to watch the Longhorns opening NCAA game.  They beat Asheville handily.  I got to meet Sam and his wife, as well as Jay the producer and his entourage.  Didn't see Bob there, though.  What a great room for watching a game, I don't know how many times I'd driven by Hills and figured it was some nondescript hole in the wall.  Boy, was I wrong.  What a nice place!  Deluxe, first class in all ways.

Max's Birthday at Hill's Cafe and First Day of Spring and War Thursday March 20 -  Max's big bash at Hill's is tonight at Bob's joint out on South Congress.  Lot's of music and bands will be playing.  Meanwhile, CNN's ratings will be skyrocketing today with the opening of hostilities in Iraq.  Hopefully, it will be clean, quick and short.  PTW called in to the show and expressed the hope that we can finish this conflict like our Greatest Generation did 50 years ago when we led the world back to order with the Marshall Plan.  Big news day today with the Sweet 16, the War, the first day of Spring, and Max's birthday at Hills all going on.

In other news, "Small-time businesses still struggle . . . Radio host seeks to reopen doors of pub, ease development rules" by P. Ryan Petkoff (Daily Texan Staff) March 17, 2003 - Radio personality Bob Cole spent most Wednesday afternoons eating home-style chicken and dumplings at The Tavern, the pub just down the street from the station where he works. And in the evenings, he nursed a pint of Coors Light, leaning in at times to help potential business partners drown out the dart players and college kids who swapped grades for Guinness and good times."  See the rest of the Daily Texan article on Bob Cole buying the Tavern ". . . and now [Cole] wants to reopen the watering hole and meeting place he calls "a microcosm of Austin."

Max in his Mayor Pro Tem suitLean Beef Wednesday March 19 -  Max was supposed to be relaxed, but the question about the war resolution that Max supposedly sponsored on the Council, really put Max on the defensive right off the bat.  Max called it an "ambush" and asked them to "show him the document!"  He overreacted and Sam and Bob had to calm him down and reboot the program.  Max's own campaign people warned him that this was a hot potato issue. Bob said he "went bananas".   It got better for Max fast.

Max then went on the tell about how he got the City "out of the funk" in the last bust, he got rid of the porno theater with the Cops and the recited the litany of his past achievements.  He got asked about his '88 tax abatements and about the recent abatement proposals (eg Whole Foods/Borders).  "If you're really, really rich you don't have to pay taxes" - Sam.  Max said that today he no longer supports tax abatements.

Max put together a plan for "the best transit system in America" which costs one tenth the cost of light rail, saving $2 billion.  He declared himself to be a real efficient spender.  Bob said his support of the police department was commendable and praised his light rail proposal.  "Light rail is an all or nothing bet," said Max.  He favors $5 million to plan light rail along the existing tracks for Mopac which will be cleared by the State effort to move Mopac to IH35 (or was it Loop 130?).  He proposes a better, more efficient bus system with smaller buses, van pools, hybrid car rebates (Sam: "Cap Metro is going to pay people to buy a certain kind of car that looks really goofy?").

Sam said when he gets to be Mayor, he's going to fix the basic city business.  Max said "Marc Katz said there's nothing we can do about transportation problems . . . he doesn't know what to do."  Max wants to cut City spending like he did in the late 80s.  Sam "I wouldn't mention the late 80s if I were you."  Cole asked "How do you make small business the backbone of the economy?"  Max said he knows just how to that, he improved his South Congress neighborhood as a community organizer and helped the businesses flourish by fixing the porn and prostitution problems.  He wants to do the same thing East Cesar Chavez, Burnet Road, First Street, and other areas of Austin.

Max said Wynn supported the CSC subsidies on top of Liberty Lunch, "Wynn's all about big development at the expense of our local mom and pop institutions."  Will Wynn's "for war and against music" says Max.

Max is going to have his 55th birthday party March 20 at Hill's Cafe.  Max was born on the first day of Spring. Sam and Bob and Max ended with a lovefest. "Can you feel the love," Bob Cole.

Friday March 7 - It's the morning after for Brad Meltzer, the Sam and Bob postgame show. Sam's analysis of Brad Meltzer, "the biggest, stupidest jerk I've ever had on the show."  And Bob even heaped more praise on Meltzer, "I kept trying to help him but he kept "b****h" slapping me."  The callers today, except for one or two, weren't impressed either.

Thursday March 6 - Brad Meltzer went on the show, it was a misunderstanding that he canceled the other day and the hosts apologized.  And it's austinmayor.com's bad too! We apologize for rubbing it in about the cancellation and, as you see, have removed all references that that ribbing. You showed up, Brad, and rolled with the punches.

The show illustrated there's a tremendous outpouring of interest in the Mayor's race, the phone lines were jammed.  And the interview went way over the allotted time.

The big news!  Brad is the first Mayoral candidate to agree to an online debate on this website (details to be announced in the next couple of days).  He is going to need a fast typist though, if he thinks it was tough on Sam and Bob, this is going to be a real test of his knowledge and in depth understanding of the issues.  We're planning a series of online debates where they'll be one on one with the voters in a rapid fire chatroom and also in a more relaxed web conferencing center.  We hope it will be a historic exercise in local electronic democracy.

Brad talked about the housing issue, He stayed beyond the allotted time.  Bob gave him a nice pat on the back at the end of a grueling two hour interrogation, um, interview (can we send these Sam and Bob to Pakistan with a case of sodium pentothol  to "interview" Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and really put him on the spot?).  Bob said he was a guy who's made a bunch of money and now's trying to turn around and do some good for the community.  I liked the lady who chided Sam and Bob for their harsh treatment but, in the final analysis, isn't that why we turn on the show?  I'm not even going to try and offer them the "kid gloves"; won't work!

Tuesday March 4 - Big partyin' goin' on in the Mayors race.  Two big campaign kickoffs.  Thursday, Brad Meltzer at the Broken Spoke starting around 6:30 pm and Friday the Katz campaign's rocking out down at One Pastrami Center (Sixth and Rio Grande) starting around 5:30 pm.  Sam and Bob think that the webmaster of austinmayor.com is "lonely".

Google now lists this item as the number one search item if you look for Will Wynn, go to http://news.google.com and sort by date:
Max For austinmayor.com? Austin Chronicle, TX - 27 Feb 2003 Last week the Will Wynn campaign announced it wouldn't participate in any online forums, chats, or other activities hosted by the new Web site Austinmayor.com. ...

Friday Feb 28 - Sam and Bob, you just finally got my Amish joke today, didn't you?  Here's the printed version. Sam, how did you know I read the joke?  I sounded so natural like given that you only gave me a minute to spew it out.  It's George Stephanopoulos, not Stinkanopoulos, guys.  ABC should have kept Cokie, I agree with Bob on this one.

By the way, congratulations Bob Cole on being inducted in to the Country Hall of Fame even though you haven't quite made it on the list yet!  They just need to update their website. You're in some pretty awesome company, both in the Hall of Fame and in the KVET studios.

Sam and Bob are Austin's talk show kings  (or do I mean swat team?) on the radio.  Their show is one of the best places in the community to get a no bs take on local politics and the Mayor's race. AustinMayor.com has an ongoing confrontation about the Mayors race on this show.  Bob thinks austinmayor.com's Paul  "sounds like a reasonable fellow" and Sammy says "Schmuck".  Kind of a good guy bad guy act, yeah sort of

Marc Katz came on the show Feb 27 and announced his campaign kickoff on March 7th at "One Pastrami Center" otherwise known as Sixth and Rio Grande. Austinmayor.com has a rare interview with Katz who is promising to give us an exclusive on his blockbuster announcement to come out in the next week or two.  Details on the Marc Katz page.  We're still waiting for that website of Katz' to lively up.

George StephanopoulosRecent news gathered from the Sam and Bob Show (Feb 25) is that Leslie got busted for public intoxication and got let out right away.  And  (Feb 26) they're "tearing in to Jennifer Gale" (Feb 26). And Marc Katz live interview with Sam only (Feb 27). Stories like these make it on to the austinmayor.com website because we hear it there first, before it hits the Chronicle or the Statesman. What they didn't tell you is that since his incarceration, Leslie has undergone a makeover and now he looks like the picture on the left.

Sam and Bob think that everyone in the race so far is and outsider except for Max Nofziger ("something there") and Will Wynn ("really something there").  They look at Will Wynn as the overwhelming favorite, the frontrunner, the man to beat.  Their Leslie commentary is that "the joke has gone too far".  "Marc Katz: ...eyyhhh". Jennifer Gale, "nahhh" or something like that. I forgot what they said about Brad Meltzer.

The real test for austinmayor.com is coming.  The site is getting ready to roll out its own special sections on candidate Max Nofziger and candidate Will Wynn, austinmayor.com has been pointing at their official sites up until now.  You'll find a no holds barred, objective look at both the Max and Will campaigns when we roll this out on Tuesday March 4th, 2003  live during the Sam and Bob Show.  You'll find out how objective we are, because we're taking on both of the big dogs (Nofziger and Wynn) and seeing what's really there and what's not there. Per suggestion from the Sam and Bob show's producer, austinmayor.com will be calling in to the show on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays and providing updates on the Mayors race in Austin.

Material below from the Sam and Bob website, and we quote now:

Format: The multitude of listeners dictates the topic of the day, hour, or minute. It doesn't matter if the subject is politics, music, sports, or even sage wisdom from Austin's self-proclaimed authorities on everything.

Music:
The Morning Call-In Show
probably has more live music than any other morning radio show in the US. Recently, its listeners were treated to the musical talents of artists such as Willie Nelson, Larry Gatlin, Roy Clark, Rick Trevino, Rhett Akins, Clint Black, David Ball, Dwight Yoakam, and the Dixie Chicks. Sam and Bob are also very supportive of local musicians and have hosted every local favorite from Jerry Jeff Walker to Don Walser.

Public Service:
Whether it's a spontaneous decision to hold a Beanie Baby drive for a terminally ill child, a million-dollar fund raiser for the Children's Hospital, or a friendly reminder to vote on Election Day, Sam and Bob use the success of their show and KVET's 105,000 watts to be a positive resource for the community with the result of truly making a difference in Austin's quality of life.

The sum of two halves is generally greater than the whole. With Sam and Bob, the sum of each part equals Austin's number one morning radio show. Perhaps because Sam is Austin's most enduring daily radio personality since 1969, and Bob is right behind him (in Austin since 1977), they are second to none on Austin's radio waves.

Texas couldn't break Orangemens "perfect zone" Jim Vertuno AP NEW ORLEANS - Sunday 4/6/2003 Texas thought it had the tools to break down the vaunted Syracuse zone: penetration, rebounding and outside shooting. All them worked for a while against the Orangemen - Texas scored 85 points, the most Syracuse had given up during the NCAA tournament - but rarely did all of them work together. And the bench strength Texas counted on for so many big shots and rebounds over the course of the season was nowhere to be found when it mattered most.

All-American point guard T.J. Ford was solid in spurts - he finished with 12 points and 13 assists - but he couldn't grab control of the game. Brandon Mouton was brilliant with 20 first-half points. Floppy-haired freshman Brad Buckman provided a spark inside with 14 points.

But Texas never got the decisive run it needed in its first Final Four in 56 years. "They were able to keep control," Ford said. "Each half, there was always something missing." Ford is one of the craftiest guards in the country at dribbling around defenders to find that last-second assist. On this night, though, he struggled to find the gaps in what coach Rick Barnes earlier in the week had called "the perfect zone."

When Ford kicked it out, Mouton hit for four 3-pointers in the first half. It worked for a while until the Orangemen simply stretched the zone and denied the shot, limiting him to just five points the rest of the way. "They did a good job of finding me in the second half," Mouton said. When that happened, Ford went inside to Buckman, who hit all five of his shots from the floor in the first half. But even that only lasted until Buckman fouled out in the second half.

"Mouton gets on fire early on, but then coming down the stretch we missed a lot of shots that should have gone in," Buckman said. Ford, often so cool in the clutch, looked frustrated, and early foul trouble sent him to the bench for nearly six minutes of the first half. He sat there with his arms crossed and a towel draped over his leg - and watched.

Texas got only 16 points from a bench that went 10 players deep all season. Brian Boddicker had 12 points, most of them coming after Syracuse had all but sealed the victory. One of the best 3-point shooters on the team, Boddicker didn't attempt any in the first half.

"I didn't get any looks all night until the end of the game," Boddicker said. "We didn't know exactly what we were doing. Overall, we just didn't attack it the way we wanted."

James Thomas, who averaged a double-double this season while earning a reputation as one of the toughest rebounders in the Big 12, finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. But he went just 5-of-11 from the foul line with several key misses down the stretch as the Longhorns went 20-32 as a team.

Texas briefly held the lead in the second but never got it higher than 61-59. A 7-1 Syracuse run gave the Orangemen the lead for good.

"I thought if maybe we could get a a little lead, it might put a little pressure on them," Barnes said.

But Texas couldn't find the shots, from the floor or the foul line. Ford and Thomas missed jumpers and Boddicker and Thomas went 2-of-6 from the line as Syracuse seized control.

"I think for the first time all year, we really flinched," Thomas said. "All year, we would always come back and we had a lot of great wins, but it just didn't happen for us tonight."

It is Thursday evening and I am watching a story on 20/20 with interest.  Molly Bingham.  One of the captured journalists just released in Iraq is telling her story.  It was her dad, Barry Bingham Jr., who in 1970 hired me (PTW) on my first big photojournalist gig.  I got to go to Honduras in Central America for a month as part of the "Salute to Latin America" in Louisville and was proud to be contributing the Pulitizer photography prize winning Courier Journal as a freelancer.  Eleanor Bingham was well known in our little hippie enclave on St. James Court and, at the time, the oldest Bingham son had died in a freak car accident, his head decapitated by a surfboard that he had in his cars back seat that caught on something while he was driving.  I'm glad the Binghams didn't have another tragedy on their hands this time.   For many days Molly Bingham said she didn't know if they were going to take her out and kill her, torture her, rape her or set her free.  Now, she's free and the world will get exposed to her great photos from Iraq and other world hotspots.  Here are more of my thoughts on Molly Bingham and life in the 70s in Louisville.

Nude Chicks Come Clean? Cry on Primetime
Link to latest Dixie Chicks news

Banned from country radioFriday, April 25 - Record sales are down 40 per cent since Dixie Chicks' singer Natalie Maines told a London concert audience last month that she was ashamed President Bush came from her home state, Texas but the Chicks are more worried about their personal safety than they are about this drop off.  KGSR is still spinning their songs, Waterloo Records says their sales have slacked off.  Their Austin concert is sold out and only 45 people have tried to return their tickets.  But one lady on the KVUE News last night was reported by Ticketmaster to say she wanted a front row seat so she could throw eggs at Natalie Maines.

"Just so you know," Natalie told the London audience, "we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." So is she sorry she said that? The host of "PrimeTime", Diane Sawyer, interviewed the sales-starved trio about the remark and was told Maines hadn't meant to be "disrespectful", but that the market reaction -- which includes a play ban on many country music radio stations -- was akin to book-burning.

Why had she said it at all? "Out of frustration. At that moment, on the eve of war, I had a lot of questions that I felt were unanswered," Maines said. Fair enough, but then she went on to say, "I feel regret for, you know, the choice of words. Or the non-choice of words...Am I sorry that I asked questions and that I don't just follow? No."

(continued further down this page)

Chicks come clean? cry on tv (continued)

Co-singer Martie Maguire added to the semantic disarray by claiming, we think, that radio play bans by stations with declared editorial positions that supported President Bush were similar to book burning. But it's not clear from her statement whether she is upset with the stations or the people who run the stations -- or just people who don't listen to country music and have a bad impression of it.

"Maybe take us off the air for a week, and give us a spanking . . . those radio stations, we have nothing against them. It's the people who have gone overboard and done such irrational things that take you back to the days of book-burning. That is a concern for me in our format, that this is how country music is being viewed now, by people who don't like country music, and I just don't like what that says," she told Sawyer.

Also revealed: the group have been receiving death threats and will use metal detectors to screen audiences as they start a national tour in America that kicks off next week in South Carolina.

The Rolling Stone used its editorial discretion to remove the ramble from the responses and gave a generally sympathetic hearing to the trio, but closed its story with an affirmation that will only further anger country music fans: "Maines remained firm that the group isn't seeking forgiveness from anyone. 'Accept the apology that was made,' Maines said. 'But don't forgive us for who we are.'"

According to the partial transcript made available ahead of the show by PrimeTime (and quoted verbatim by a sympathetic Country Music Times), what she actually said was a little more, well, off the cuff: “Accept us. Accept an apology that was made. Accept that ... what we're saying right now is heartfelt, full of compassion and honesty, but to forgive us ... don't forgive us for who we are.”

So what are the chaffed Chicks going to do to smooth over the rift with former fans?

In an apparent effort to restart fan demand, the trio has taken a very aggressive public relations tack that has not, so far, done any good for sales. But their latest move is certain to sell a few magazines, even if it doesn't generate radio play.

The trio are featured nude on a forthcoming cover (above) for Entertainment Weekly, among America's most-read entertainment titles.

Emily Robison, left, Natalie Maines, center, and Martie Maguire (Natalie's sister), are on the cover of the May 2, 2003, issue of Entertainment Weekly.

Will it ultimately work? Maybe if they stop talking.

The latest turn on their foot-in-mouth apology front: Natalie says she was opposed to the war, certainly, but still supported "the troops".

"We support the troops 100 per cent. We have said that from day one. There's no correlation in not wanting a war and not supporting the troops who are doing the job," she said.

ExtraTV quotes Diane Sawyer as observing, "I think it's fair to say they were stunned by the backlash."

According to Billboard's Top Country Albums chart, the Dixie Chicks returned to number one position after a week's decline in sales for their third major-label album, Home, but it was a week in which no new albums made the top ten.

Tuesday, April 22 - One woman calling in to Sam and Bob Extravaganza this morning asked if Will Wynn's wife was one of the Dixie Chicks so you make the call.  Sam and Bob have reaffirmed their love for Jennifer Gale, who called in to announce her new campaign slogan, “Vote like the West Texas wind, whoossshhh, Gale for mayor.”.   Sam and Bob came out with a strong endorsement of Gale, their strongest yet in the Mayorial race.  (pronounced May Or Eee All) Sam and bob couldn't quite spit out the name of their favorite political website though, Sam about choked when Bob started to say it.    "Irregardless, it's about branding isn't it?" said Will Wynn, as he floated face up, fully clothed in Barton Springs.    Have you seen the video of the  Mathew McConaughey joke about wearing sandals on Saturday Night LIve (MM pictured in between Mrs. Will Wynn and Natalie Maines in the above picture) or the Dixie Chicks video from the same SNL?  We will be asking Patty Metzler and Max Nofzinger for commentary.  See austinmayor.com's Dixie Chicks in the News page for more.

Thursday's at Hill's Cafe: Salsa Party for Kinky Friedman Austinmayor.com attended the affair at Hills, the salsa flowed freely (peach, bean and regular) and it was a great time.  Kinky was signing books and PTW  got to meet Bob Cole and reminisce about the Dixie Chicks concert (PTWs wife Dorothy: "Honey, it's April 3rd, I think that joke was starting to get old on the afternoon of April 1st"). Cole commented that he was expecting a "a thin, 30 year old guy with dark hair" We should have stayed longer, the "First Thursday" and the "Wynnmobile" were a dud as far as any mayoral activity goes; we'll have comments on that on that on our main page later today.  You can watch our exclusive video of the Kinky Salsa party if you have Windows Media player. And there's our picture gallery of the event.  Even better is our thumbnail page with all the pictures we captured from the video.

It was weird with my phone when I called the Sam and Bob show today (Thursday), I was using our isdn voice line and the shortly after I connected to the program, I lost the connection.  I wanted to talk about the First Thursday event.  I'll try tomorrow on a regular phone line.  I only heard something about Sam saying my wife was "staring at him" and I asked Dot about this.  Some guy named Lefty thought I was Sam.  She says that Sam looks like her brother Harold, a lawyer who lives in Vancouver.  She wasn't "staring at him", (give me a break Sammy).

Thursday April 4 - Bob Cole's burning question of the day, who's prettier?  Maureen Dowd or Molly Ivins?  You make the call. If you think Molly is the hottest mama send an email to molly@austinmayor.com and tell us why.  If you think it's NY Times Maureen (she's on the left) who is the hottest news babe email maureen@austinmayor.com and tell us why ... for more on local newsbabes, see http://www.spring.net/newsbabes and see who was Austin's hottest news babe last year and vote for this years.  Meanwhile, our troops are now in Baghdad and just made an inspection cruise through one of the Presidential Palaces and are eyeballing the International Airport.  It's the military equivalent of Cedric Bensen scoring a touchdown in the red zone.

Tuesday April 2 - What a great concert that was last night, the Geezinslaws and Chicks got to jam together! OK, the jokes gone too far.  Back to reality today.  The move on Baghdad has begun and the Men and Womens basketball teams have both made it to the Final Four.  Check out Will Wynn's speaking schedule for the week at http://austinmayor.com/will

Geezinslaws, Dixie Chicks announce benefit concert to be held for Mayor Candidate Leslie at Hills Cafe; Peter Arnett to emcee; Geraldo, Cole on tap

Monday April 1 Sammy Allred's Geezinslaws and the Dixie Chicks will hold a benefit concert for Mayoral candidate Leslie tonight at Hills Cafe in South Austin.  Peter Arnett will emcee the concert which will feature guest appearances by Geraldo Rivera, Brad Meltzer, George Stephanopoulos, and Bob Cole.  The Dixie Chicks Natalie Maines said, when Sammy threw his hat in Leslies ring I knew the Chicks had to take a stand that might be considered unpopular by some, but Leslie is our man, or is he our woman?  Sammy stated, "Leslie is the key to Austin's future and he has skillfully articulated the issues that face Austin.  Will Wynn doesn't stand a chance with the kind of support the Dixie Chicks and the Geezinslaws are throwing to the Leslie Juggernaut.Bob Cole responded, "Sammy, have you lost your mind?"  When asked for comment, austinmayor.com said "sounds like some kind of April Fool's joke" but planned on attending the benefit.

What's up with Peter Arnett?  He's been fired by NBC according to Bob.  Here's one story:
NBC Severs Ties With Journalist Arnett Austin American Statesman, TX  NEW YORK (AP)--NBC fired journalist Peter Arnett on Monday, saying it was wrong for him to give an interview with state-run Iraqi TV saying that the American-led coalition's first war plan had failed because of Iraq's resistance. Arnett himself called the interview a "misjudgment.''  Sam and Bob played an interview with Arnett that may have been streamed from the Internet, he was obviously embarrassed and disappointed about his 15 minute mishap that ended a 40 year career as a war reporter.  Matt Lauer said he respected the work he had done, others are saying he's a "traitor".  "He's coming back to the States to emcee Dixie Chicks concerts", said Cole.

Tuesday March 25 - Bob has been talking about the Al Jazeera pictures of US captives and dead and that folks should be able to see them.  Al Jazeera just launched their English language website today and here are the pictures (warning, these are very graphic, do not view if you are faint hearted) and we're debating about whether or not to show the video on our website.  How do you feel about this?
