Austin's annual Bike to Work Day arrives Friday, May 15, with the city's transportation department teaming up with a roster of cycling-focused partners to turn City Hall into a morning celebration for commuters who pedaled in.
Austin Transportation and Public Works is hosting the event alongside Get There ATX, the Ghisallo Cycling Initiative, Movability, and CapMetro Bikeshare. Organizers are inviting Austinites to join one of several group rides converging on City Hall, where city leaders will be on hand to greet riders.
The City Hall gathering includes free coffee, tacos, and giveaways, framing the day less as a transportation policy moment and more as a community thank-you to the residents who use bikes as part of their daily commute.
For city officials, Bike to Work Day is also a visibility play. Austin has invested in protected bike lanes, urban trails, and shared mobility infrastructure for years, and turnout at the City Hall celebration tends to be cited in budget season as evidence that bike commuting is more than a niche interest.
CapMetro Bikeshare's role this year underscores how much the city's bike network has shifted toward integrated, shared-fleet options — with stations now woven into many neighborhoods that lacked them just a few years ago. Get There ATX's involvement, meanwhile, reflects the city's ongoing push to bundle bike commuting with transit, carpooling, and other alternatives to single-occupancy driving.
The Ghisallo Cycling Initiative, a long-running Austin nonprofit, focuses on youth and adult cycling education, while Movability brings the employer-side perspective — helping companies offer commute benefits that include cycling.
Riders looking to join the day are encouraged to find a group ride or simply pedal directly to City Hall during the morning commute window. As always, the city is asking riders to wear helmets, follow traffic laws, and use lights and lanes where available.
