Biography

Who is Mike Siegel?

Mike Siegel brings 25 years of public service to council, having worked as a public school teacher, nonprofit leader, and civil rights lawyer. Earlier in his career he served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Austin, where he co-authored and defended city policies including the paid sick leave ordinance.

He earned his B.A. from Brandeis University and his J.D. from Cornell Law School. He twice ran as the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress in Texas’s 10th District before turning his focus to local Austin politics.

Siegel was elected in November 2024 and took office January 6, 2025. He resides in Crestview with his wife, Dr. Hindatu Mohammed (a local veterinarian), and their two children.

On council he has emphasized climate action, affordable-housing development, and creating renewable-energy employment for local workers. He serves as Vice Chair of two of the council’s most consequential committees: Housing & Planning and Austin Energy Oversight.

District 7

North Austin — the geography.

District 7 covers north austin Austin and includes neighborhoods such as Crestview, North Loop (west), Brentwood, Allandale, Wooten (west), Highland (west), Gracywoods, North Shoal Creek, North Lamar corridor. Council members are accountable to the residents of their single district as well as to the city as a whole — that is the core idea of the 10-1 system.
