Earlier in his career he served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Austin, where he co-authored and defended city policies including the paid sick leave ordinance.
He earned his B.A. from Brandeis University and his J.D. from Cornell Law School. He twice ran as the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress in Texas’s 10th District before turning his focus to local Austin politics.
Siegel was elected in November 2024 and took office January 6, 2025. He resides in Crestview with his wife, Dr. Hindatu Mohammed (a local veterinarian), and their two children.
On council he has emphasized climate action, affordable-housing development, and creating renewable-energy employment for local workers. He serves as Vice Chair of two of the council’s most consequential committees: Housing & Planning and Austin Energy Oversight.
District 7 covers north austin Austin and includes neighborhoods such as Crestview, North Loop (west), Brentwood, Allandale, Wooten (west), Highland (west), Gracywoods, North Shoal Creek, North Lamar corridor. Council members are accountable to the residents of their single district as well as to the city as a whole — that is the core idea of the 10-1 system.
Standing committees do most of the early-stage policy work before items reach the full council. Chair and vice-chair roles confer meaningful agenda-setting power.
Aggressive push on Austin Energy’s renewable targets and a green-jobs pipeline.
Housing & Planning vice-chair role gives him direct leverage on land-development code.
Background as a civil-rights litigator shapes his approach to APD oversight and worker protections.
Continuing the legal fight he co-authored as Asst. City Attorney.
Austin residents can contact any council member, but for district-specific issues (zoning, code enforcement, neighborhood concerns) the District 7 office is the right starting point.
